Hwanung was known in Korean folk religion as a "supreme divine regent" who played an important role in the creation of man. In the Legend of Dangun, Hwanung seemingly turned a bear into a woman, mated with her, and gave birth to the first human man, named Dangun. Dangun would lead the chosen kingdom for almost two thousand years.
