N 2986 is a clay tablet that contains lines 375-380 (reverse side) of "Inanna's Descent to the Netherworld," a Sumerian afterlife myth in cuneiform script. The obverse side of the tablet contains another myth (composition) according to the scholar who initially published the artifact. The artifact was first published by William R. Sladek as part of his 1974 PhD dissertation at Johns Hopkins University as Figure IX. Åke Sjöberg later republished the other side of the artifact in 1977.

The small artifact is in poor condition and only provides a few lines towards the entire myth.

N 2986 was discovered during excavations in Iraq during the 20th century CE. William Sladek was the first scholar to publish the artifact in 1974 and provided sketches, a translation, transliteration, and commentary.^[1] In 1977, Åke Sjöberg published a brief article in the Journal of Cuneiform Studies whereby released refined sketches of N 2986 (reverse side as well).^[2] It's also worthy to note that Sjöberg mentored Sladek while he was writing his PhD dissertation.

At the netherworld she enters and goes through seven gates before she is turned into a corpse. Ninsubur follows the instructions and tells Inanna's father Enkil what happened. He helps her by sending two a-sexual creatures to sneak in and bring her back to life. Once Inanna is alive she ascends while being escorted by demons from the netherworld. The demons allow her to trade her husband Dumuzi in her place.
