Niccolò Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat, historian, philosopher, writer, and poet.
William K. Marriott was a translator of many Renaissance works, including The Prince by Machiavelli.
The Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli around 1513, remains as one of world's most controversial political treatises. This status is largely due to the short work's emphasis on moral wrongdoing. It is a field guide for princes of city states during the Renaissance period in Italy. Despite being written for Lorenzo the Magnificent as a pseudo-job application, it is widely believed that he never read it. The book originally had no title and was released after the death of Machiavelli in 1527.
